Riverbend Poetry Series 2014 QPF Program Launch

Next Tuesday night I have been invited to read at the 2014 Queensland Poetry Festival program launch which will be held in conjunction with the final Riverbend Poetry Series event for the year. The lineup includes:

Murri poet and long-time activist Lionel Fogarty, the enigmatic stories of The Bell Divers, winner of the 2013 Queensland Literary Award for Best Emerging Author Rebecca Jessen, local poets Vanessa Page & John Koenig debuting a brand-new collaborative piece, and Zenobia Frost reading from 2014 AQ Poet in Residence Warsan Shire‘s book.

The event is held next Tuesday 24 June at 6pm for a 6.30pm start at Riverbend Books & Teahouse in Bulimba. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through the Riverbend website hereThis event regularly sells out so it is advised to get your tickets before the night of the event.

It’s a beautiful venue and it should be a fabulous night of poetry readings and performances. I’m delighted to have been asked to participate in the night where I will share a taste of my QPF 2014 performance with a reading from my verse novel Gap.

Last week I arrived back home in Brisbane from The Emerging Writers Festival in Melbourne. It was my first writers festival as a panelist and I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience. The festival has a wonderful supportive, friendly vibe that is not at all intimidating, and I met many lovely creative and interesting people during my stay. Sam Twyford-Moore the festival director and the whole EWF team did a fabulous job at making this year’s festival inclusive and stimulating on several levels, with many conversations and panels taking place that might be otherwise overlooked at the larger writers festivals. Leading up to my other festival appearances later this year, The Emerging Writers Festival was the perfect foray into the world as a published author.

On my return from EWF I met with my publisher at UQP and received the first advance copies of my verse novel Gap.

It has been just over a year since finishing writing Gap, and to hold it in my hands as a tangible object was an incredible feeling. I’m so pleased with the design which was executed by the very talented Sandy Cull. Sandy did a wonderful job capturing the mood and themes of the book and translating those visually into the cover design and incorporating that aesthetic throughout the book. There is also a lovely quote on the back cover by Lisa Jacobson, author of one of my favourite books last year, The Sunlit Zone.

Gap will be available for purchase from all good bookshops from Wednesday July 23. I’m also excited to announce that the book launch will be held at Avid Reader in West End on Friday August 8. Closer to the event I will post more details. If you can’t wait a month and would like to read a sample of Gap, UQP have one up on their website which can be found here.

I also have some new writing up which you can click through and read more of here.
